Zanskar Valley 2026: The New Road, The Holy Mountain & The End of Isolation
Category: Destinations / Zanskar | Author: Ladakh and Kashmir Express
For decades, Zanskar was the “Hidden Kingdom.” It was a place you could only reach after a grueling 2-day drive from Kargil or a week-long trek on a frozen river.
In 2026, everything has changed.
With the near-completion of the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha (NPD) Road, Zanskar is no longer Ladakh’s backyard; it is the new front door. You can now drive from Manali to the heart of Zanskar in a single (albeit long) day, bypassing Leh entirely.
But with easier access comes a new question: Is the magic still there? At Ladakh and Kashmir Express, we believe Zanskar is currently in its “Golden Era”—accessible enough to visit, but still wild enough to thrill.
Here is your guide to the new Zanskar.

The Game Changer: The Manali-Padum Highway (Shinku La)
Forget the old route (Srinagar -> Kargil -> Padum). The new way to enter Zanskar is from Manali.
- The Route: Manali -> Atal Tunnel -> Darcha -> Shinku La Pass (16,580 ft) -> Padum.
- The Status (2026): The road is largely paved. While the Shinku La Tunnel is still under construction (expected 2028), the road over the pass is fully motorable for SUVs in summer (May-Oct).
- The Benefit: What used to take 3 days now takes 10-12 hours. You can have breakfast in Manali and dinner in Padum.
Top 3 “Must-Do” Experiences in Zanskar
1. Camping at Gonbo Rangjon (The God’s Mountain)
If you enter via the new Manali route, this is your first stop. Gonbo Rangjon is a solitary, majestic rocky peak that stands alone in the valley like a sentinel.
- The Vibe: It is revered by locals. Camping at its base, under the Milky Way (Zanskar has zero light pollution), is a spiritual experience.
- Stay: There are now designated eco-campsites at the base. Wild camping is restricted to protect the pastureland.
2. The Phugtal Monastery Trek (Easier Than Ever)
Phugtal is the “Honeycomb Monastery” built into a cliffside, hanging over the Tsarap River.
- The Update: Previously, this was a 3-day trek. Now, the road extends up to Purne/Cha village.
- The Trek: From Purne, it is just a 45-minute to 1-hour walk to the monastery. You can easily do it as a day trip from Padum.
3. Drang Drung Glacier & Pensi La
If you drive towards Kargil, you will cross the Pensi La pass.
- The View: The Drang Drung Glacier looks like a frozen river of ice winding through the mountains. It is one of the few glaciers in India you can see right from the car window.
Practical Survival Guide: Zanskar 2026
1. Mobile Network (Airtel & Jio Revolution)
- Padum Town: Jio 4G and Airtel 5G are fully functional! You can make video calls and work remotely.
- En Route (Shinku La / Gonbo Rangjon): Zero signal. Be prepared for digital silence until you reach Padum.
2. Fuel (The “Padum Pump” Anxiety)
- There is only ONE petrol pump in the entire Zanskar region (in Padum).
- Status: It is reliable in summer, but long queues are common.
- Rule: Always carry a 10-20L Jerry Can with extra fuel if you are driving your own car.
3. Accommodation
- Padum: Has decent hotels with heating and hot water.
- Villages (Karsha/Zangla): Homestays are the best way to experience the culture. Zanskari hospitality is legendary—expect endless cups of butter tea and local barley wine (Chang).

A Note on Winter: The Chadar Trek
With the new road, will the famous Chadar Trek (frozen river trek) disappear?
- Status: Not yet. The Shinku La tunnel isn’t ready, so the road closes in winter. The Chadar Trek is still the only way locals walk to Leh in January/February, and it remains a premium adventure experience for tourists.
