Khardung La Pass 2026: The Gateway to Nubra (And How to Survive It)
It is the most famous photo op in Ladakh. A yellow concrete board covered in stickers, prayer flags fluttering violently in the wind, and a reading that says: “Khardung La – 17,982 ft.”
For decades, Khardung La held the Guinness World Record as the Highest Motorable Road in the World. While that title has technically passed to the newly built Umling La (19,024 ft), Khardung La remains the undisputed king of Ladakh tourism. Why? Because you have to cross it to reach the sand dunes of Nubra Valley.
But standing at nearly 18,000 feet is not a walk in the park. At Ladakh and Kashmir Express, we treat this pass with immense respect. It is an extreme environment where the weather can change in minutes and oxygen levels hover around 50%.
Here is your 2026 guide to conquering the mighty “K-Top.”

The “Highest Road” Debate: Khardung La vs. Umling La
Let’s clear the air.
- Is it the highest? No. As of 2026, Umling La (in Demchok sector) is officially higher.
- Is it still special? Absolutely. Khardung La is historically significant as the gateway to the Siachen Glacier and remains a massive engineering marvel maintained by the Border Roads Organization (BRO).
- The Vibe: Unlike the desolate Umling La, Khardung La is festive! You’ll find bikers high-fiving, tourists eating Maggi at the world’s highest cafeteria, and a sense of shared achievement.
The Health Warning: The “20-Minute Rule”
This is the most critical part of this guide. At 17,982 ft, the air pressure is dangerously low. The Golden Rule: Do not spend more than 15-20 minutes at the top.
- Why? Staying longer drastically increases the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Symptoms like dizziness, nausea, and severe headaches can set in quickly.
- What to Do: Get out of the car, take your photo with the signboard, visit the souvenir shop if you must, and then descend immediately towards North Pullu.
- For Heart Patients: If you have a heart condition or severe asthma, consult your doctor. We recommend carrying a portable oxygen cylinder (standard in all Ladakh and Kashmir Express vehicles).

The Drive: South Pullu to North Pullu
The journey to the top is an adventure in itself.
- Leh to South Pullu (Checkpoint 1): The road is paved and smooth. You will stop here to show your permit/pay the environment fee.
- The Climb (South Pullu to K-Top): This 14km stretch is often where the adventure begins. Even in summer (June/July), you might find walls of snow on either side. The road can be slushy due to melting glaciers.
- The Descent (K-Top to North Pullu): As you descend into Nubra Valley, the landscape changes from rocky grey to the lush green of the valley floor.
What to Wear in Ladakh? (Even in July)
Do not be fooled by the sunshine in Leh.
- Temperature at Top: Often -5°C to 5°C, even in summer. Wind chill makes it feel like -10°C.
- Clothing: You need a heavy down jacket, gloves, and a woolen cap.
- Eyes: Sunglasses are mandatory. The reflection of sun off the snow can cause “snow blindness” in minutes.

Practical Tips for 2026
- Best Time to Visit: April to October. In winter, the pass remains open for army/locals but can close suddenly due to heavy snowfall.
- Traffic Jams: Yes, at 18,000 ft! In peak season (May/June), narrow sections can get jammed with tourist convoys and army trucks. Be patient; the BRO clears it fast.
- Toilet Facilities: There are eco-toilets at the top, but they are basic. Better facilities are available at South Pullu and North Pullu checkpoints.
- Biking Challenge: If you are renting a bike, ensure it is powerful (Royal Enfield Himalayan or similar). 100cc scooters will struggle to climb the steep gradient in the thin air.
