Kashmir isn’t just a destination; it’s an emotion. But whether you are shikara-riding in July or skiing in Gulmarg in January, the “Paradise on Earth” has very different moods and very different dress codes.
At Ladakh and Kashmir Express, we have seen many travelers arrive unprepared shivering in light cottons during autumn evenings or sweating in heavy parkas during a sunny June afternoon.
To help you pack smart and travel light, here is our ultimate guide on what to wear in Kashmir for every season.

The Golden Rule: Dress in Layers
Before we get into the seasons, remember the one rule that applies 365 days a year in the Himalayas: Layering.
Even in summer, the weather in Kashmir can be unpredictable. A sunny morning can turn into a chilly, rainy afternoon within minutes. Instead of bringing one giant heavy coat, bring multiple thinner layers that you can peel off or put on as the temperature dictates.
PART 1: Packing for Summer (April to June) & Autumn (September to October)
Average Temperature: 15°C to 30°C (Day) | 5°C to 12°C (Night)
Summer in Kashmir is pleasant, not hot. It’s perfect t-shirt weather in the sun, but you will need warmth the moment you step into the shade or when the sun sets.
1. The Essentials
- Cotton T-shirts/Shirts: Full sleeves are better to protect against the high-altitude sun.
- Light Woolens/Cardigans: You will definitely need a light jacket or pullover for the mornings and evenings.
- Jeans/Trousers: Denim is perfect for this weather. Avoid shorts if you plan to visit religious sites or rural areas (more on that below).
2. For the Higher Altitudes (Gulmarg/Sonamarg) Even if it’s 25°C in Srinagar, it might be 10°C in Gulmarg or at the Zero Point in Sonamarg.
- Windcheater/Jacket: A water-resistant light jacket is a must.
- Scarf/Stole: Handy for sudden breezes and adds a touch of style.
3. Footwear
- Walking Shoes/Sneakers: You will be walking a lot (gardens, hills, markets). Comfortable sneakers are your best friend. Sandals are okay for the hotel, but not for sightseeing.

PART 2: Packing for Winter (November to March)
Average Temperature: 0°C to 12°C (Day) | -10°C to -4°C (Night)
Winter in Kashmir is magical, but it is bone-chilling if you aren’t ready. The cold here is dry and piercing.
1. The Three-Layer System
- Base Layer (Thermals): This is non-negotiable. You need a good quality upper and lower thermal set (merino wool or synthetic). This stays against your skin.
- Mid Layer (Insulation): Fleece jackets or thick wool sweaters. These trap your body heat.
- Outer Layer (Protection): A heavy down jacket (puffer jacket) or a windproof/waterproof parka. This protects you from snow, wind, and rain.
2. Bottoms
- Woolen Trousers/Thick Jeans: Wear your thermal leggings underneath them.
- Waterproof Pants: If you plan to roll in the snow in Gulmarg, carry waterproof trekking pants so you don’t get wet and freeze.
3. Extremities (Don’t Forget These!)
- Head: A warm beanie or monkey cap that covers your ears.
- Hands: Waterproof gloves (especially for snow activities). Woolen gloves get wet and useless in snow.
- Neck: A thick muffler or neck gaiter.
- Socks: Woolen socks are a must. Carry extra pairs because wet socks = frostbite risk.
4. Footwear
- Snow Boots: Regular sneakers will slip on ice and get soaked in snow. You need water-resistant boots with good grip.
- Pro Tip from Ladakh and Kashmir Express: If you don’t own snow boots, don’t buy them just for one trip! You can easily rent high-quality gumboots in Tangmarg (on the way to Gulmarg) for a small daily fee.

PART 3: Cultural & Practical Tips
- Modesty Matters: Kashmir is a conservative society. While tourists have freedom, it is respectful to avoid very short skirts, deep necklines, or crop tops. When visiting shrines (Dargahs) or temples, both men and women must cover their heads. A simple scarf or handkerchief in your bag goes a long way.
- The Sun is Deceptive: The cool breeze fools you, but the UV rays at this altitude are harsh. Always wear sunglasses and sunscreen, even in winter.
- Carry Cash: While digital payments are growing, small vendors and remote areas often rely on cash. Taxi in Srinagar
