The Meadow of Gold: Why Sonamarg is More Than Just a Pitstop
By Ladakh and Kashmir Express
For decades, Sonamarg (literally “Meadow of Gold”) has suffered from “middle-child syndrome.” Travelers treat it as a lunch stop on the way to Ladakh or a quick day trip from Srinagar to see a glacier.
They are missing the point.
Sitting at 2,730 meters in the Ganderbal district, Sonamarg is the last outpost of Kashmir’s lush greenery before the landscape turns into the barren moonscape of Ladakh. It is a place of violent beauty—where the Sindh River thunders rather than flows, and where glaciers hang so low you feel you could touch them.
With the 2025-26 opening of the Z-Morh Tunnel, Sonamarg is no longer just a summer fling; it is now an all-weather destination. Here is how to explore it differently.
🚇 The Game Changer: Z-Morh Tunnel
- The Old Story: In winters past, Sonamarg was cut off. Heavy snow at Gagangir meant the road was closed from November to April.
- The New Reality: The 6.5 km Z-Morh Tunnel has changed everything. You can now drive from Srinagar to Sonamarg in any weather, bypassing the avalanche-prone areas. This means you can now experience Sonamarg in January, buried under 6 feet of snow—a silent white wonderland that rivals Lapland.
🏔️ Beyond Thajiwas: The Offbeat Trail
Every tourist goes to Thajiwas Glacier. They get on a pony, get hassled by touts, take a selfie, and leave. You can do better.
1. Nilagrad River: The Red Miracle
About 6 km from the main market lies a hidden marvel—the Nilagrad River.
- The Phenomenon: The water here is a distinct reddish hue. Locals believe it has medicinal properties (curing skin ailments).
- The Confluence: Watch where this red mountain stream crashes into the turquoise blue of the Sindh River. It is a visual spectacle and completely free of crowds.
2. Fish Point
Instead of the chaotic main market, head to Fish Point.
- The Vibe: This is a designated trout fishing spot. Even if you don’t fish, the banks here are flatter and grassier—perfect for a picnic.
- Activity: You can get a permit to try your hand at angling (fishing) for Brown Trout. It requires patience, but the thrill of the catch in the roaring Sindh is unmatched.
3. Sarbal Village
Located near the tunnel exit, Sarbal is one of the last Kashmiri villages before the Zojila Pass.
- Why Visit: Walk through the village to see the unique architecture—houses built with stone and wood to survive fierce winters. The villagers here are incredibly hospitable; don’t be shy if they wave at you.
🥾 For the Serious Adventurer: The Great Lakes
Sonamarg is the base camp for what is arguably India’s most beautiful trek: The Kashmir Great Lakes (KGL).
- The Route: Starting from Shitkadi (just outside Sonamarg), this 7-day trek takes you through high-altitude alpine lakes like Vishansar, Krishansar, and Gadsar.
- Note: This is a serious trek, not a day hike. It runs strictly from July to September.
❄️ Winter in Sonamarg (The New Frontier)
Thanks to the tunnel, winter tourism is the new trend here.
- The “Frozen” Experience: In January and February, the Sindh River partially freezes. You can walk on the edges of the river (carefully!).
- Sledging: Unlike Gulmarg, where skiing is the focus, Sonamarg is the capital of sledging. The slopes at Hung Park are gentle and perfect for families.
- Zero Point: If the Army clears the road, you can drive up to Zero Point (Zojila) to touch the snow walls, which can be 10–15 feet high even in April.
🎒 Practical Guide: Logistics (2025-26 Update)
1. Accommodation
- Hotel Snowland: Reliable, heated rooms, and great river views.
- Village Walk: A newer boutique property that offers a more secluded feel.
- Ahsan Mount Resort: Luxury “glamping” tents (best in summer).
- Budget: J&K Tourism huts are fantastic but require booking weeks in advance at the TRC Srinagar.
2. Food: The Trout Capital
You cannot leave Sonamarg without eating Trout.
- Where: Narinder’s Restaurant or Tourist Cafeteria.
- Order: Grilled Trout with Lemon Butter sauce. It is fresh, caught from the river nearby, and melts in your mouth.
3. The Zojila Warning
If you plan to drive further toward Ladakh:
- Timing: The Zojila Pass is one of the most dangerous roads in the world. It usually opens in late April/early May.
- One-Way Traffic: Traffic is often regulated (one day for Srinagar to Leh, the next for Leh to Srinagar). Always check the Traffic Control Room update before leaving Sonamarg.

Final Word from Ladakh and Kashmir Express
Sonamarg is intense. The mountains are steeper, the river is louder, and the air is crisper than anywhere else in Kashmir. Don’t just pass through. Stop, breathe, and let the “Gold” of the meadow sink in.
